Symbols of National Pride
Historic landmarks, are often symbols of national pride in a nation. These sites are also frequent destinations for visitors from around the world. There are several of these destinations that are on my list of places to see and things to do in my lifetime. Travel beyond the continental United States requires air or boat travel. Air travel is the easiest, my local airport has flights daily to a variety of destinations. Here is a list of a few of the places I’d like to visit. Stonehenge, in England a prized historic site and symbol of national pride for Britian. This site is one of the oldest rings of standing stones in the United Kingdom. Visitors from around the world travel to see this unique formation. Its origins are linked to the druids of old, and this site inspires the nation, and the world to remember its ancient past. Buckingham Palace in London, England, for two centuries this palace has been the home of English royalty. This building is a symbol of a nations enduring power and national pride. The changing of the gaurd happens daily and is a perfect time to view this iconic location. Blarney Castle, in County Cork, Ireland is the home of the fabled Blarney Stone, both are symbols of national pride. The castle, built approximately six hundred years was home to Cormac MacCarthy one of Ireland’s most noted chieftains. The Blarney stone located on the cliff beneath the castle is said to imbue any who kiss it with the gift of gab. Stirling Castle, in Stirling, Scotland, is one of the largest castles in Scotland and famous for its architecture. This historic structure is surrounded by steep cliffs on three of its sides which made it highly prized as a defensive position during Scotland’s tumultuous history.
